Summary

Scandalous gossip, wild parties, and forbidden love - witness what the gods do after dark in this stylish and contemporary reimagining of one of mythology's best-known stories。

'Steamy, often laugh-out-loud funny and emotional' Jennifer L。 Armentrout, # 1 New York Times bestselling author of From Blood and Ash
____________________________________
Persephone, young goddess of spring, is new to Olympus。 Her mother, Demeter, has raised her in the mortal realm, but after Persephone promises to train as a sacred virgin, she's allowed to live in the fast-moving, glamorous world of the gods。

When her roommate, Artemis, takes her to a party, her entire life changes: she ends up meeting Hades and feels an immediate spark with the charming yet misunderstood ruler of the Underworld。

Now Persephone must navigate the confusing politics and relationships that rule Olympus, while also figuring out her own place - and her own power。

This edition of Smythe's original Eisner-nominated webcomic Lore Olympus features a brand-new, exclusive short story, and brings the Greek pantheon into the modern age in a sharply perceptive and romantic graphic novel。

This volume collects episodes 1-25 of the #1 WEBTOON comic Lore Olympus

Love love loved it! Huge fan of the long standing web tunes series but seeing and having a copy of her art in real life is incomparable! And to see the layout of each frame too! 10/10 can’t wait for vol 2!!

So, this was interesting。 I was somewhat invested in the characters, but found a lot of the storytelling hard to follow。 If I were more familiar with Greek mythology stories, I would probably have enjoyed it more。

I can't put into words how excited I am to have a physical format of this story。 I'm going to be devastated when the webtoon comes to an end。 I can't put into words how excited I am to have a physical format of this story。 I'm going to be devastated when the webtoon comes to an end。 。。。more

So glad they took care of the typos that were in the original WEBTOON。 And the bonus chapter was awesome!

I'd already read this on Webtoon but I just had to have a physical copy。 I absolutely love this comic and Rachel Smythe's art is just breathtaking and expressive。 Plus, that last extra chapter!!! Lore Olympus is an episodic web comic in the style of a manga (i。e。, chapters, rather than strips like a newspaper comic), and this is basically the first twenty-five episodes printed out and stuck in a book。 Unfortunately, there are several things that work well in an episodic online format that don’t work especially well in a print volume。 Examples: Smythe’s tendency to put the title card of a chapter a few panels into the chapter–in the new format, all the chapters run together and it is uncl Lore Olympus is an episodic web comic in the style of a manga (i。e。, chapters, rather than strips like a newspaper comic), and this is basically the first twenty-five episodes printed out and stuck in a book。 Unfortunately, there are several things that work well in an episodic online format that don’t work especially well in a print volume。 Examples: Smythe’s tendency to put the title card of a chapter a few panels into the chapter–in the new format, all the chapters run together and it is unclear where one ends and the next begins。 Additionally, when Rachel begins a chapter with a repeat of the last words of the previous chapter (in the manner of a “last week, on Lore Olympus”), we wind up with basically the exact same scene on facing pages。 The art is delightful (a reminder, perhaps, of how it has gone a bit downhill as the comic has gotten more and more attention and Smythe has had less time to draw each panel), although some of the panels are a bit dark and would have worked better with the colors rebalanced for print。 The actual transfiguration of the panels to pages is nice enough, although inexplicably they didn't put in any page numbers。 The “extra” chapter was cool。 Overall I guess I would have expected more care from Random House/Del Ray Books。 It's not bad, it just isn't an improvement in any sense on what's available online, except that it's here in my house instead of on a server somewhere。 Also, as a note, the comic is currently at 182 episodes with no conclusion to any of the major storylines in sight。 Volume 2 (episodes 26-50) has already been announced for spring 2022, so we can expect probably at least eight total volumes to collect。 In the end, this is going to be a comic achievement on par with Sandman, which runs to about 2,000 pages。 I don't know whether Smythe/her editors plan to make any changes to the art going forward or fix any errors (for example, a panel where a character is drawn with six fingers, panels where characters' eyebrows are in front of their hair) or if they've decided to just paste the original panels directly into their layout software and print it out。 I hope the former。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 It’s so lovely to see this on the page finally! I saw textures in the art that were much harder to notice on my phone screen, and re-living the beginning of the story was so nice and nostalgic! The emotions that I felt in the beginning just amplified now that I’m going back and experiencing them again。 The way Rachel tells this story is really special, and when she touches on more sensitive topics it’s always done in such a respectful way。 I adored the little extra that we got at the end! ‘Lore Olympus: Volume One’ collects episodes 1-25 of the #1 WEBTOON comic Lore Olympus, by Rachel Symthe。So apparently Smythe started creating this web comic in 2018, and it is currently the most popular comic on Webtoon; as of January 2020 it had 299 million views。 Confession though; I’d never heard of it。 I just stumbled across the cover for Volume One on Goodreads and thought it sounded cool (I’m a sucker for Greek Mythology updates)。 If you’re unfamiliar with the Hades and Persephone myth, a ‘Lore Olympus: Volume One’ collects episodes 1-25 of the #1 WEBTOON comic Lore Olympus, by Rachel Symthe。So apparently Smythe started creating this web comic in 2018, and it is currently the most popular comic on Webtoon; as of January 2020 it had 299 million views。 Confession though; I’d never heard of it。 I just stumbled across the cover for Volume One on Goodreads and thought it sounded cool (I’m a sucker for Greek Mythology updates)。 If you’re unfamiliar with the Hades and Persephone myth, a really good refresher is provided by YouTuber Lindsay Ellis – it’s one of the first ‘Beauty & The Beast’-esque stories and depending on who is telling and when, it’s either romanticised or given the villain edit。 In Smythe’s ‘Lore Olympus’ it’s most definitely on the romantic side, though that does not mean it’s all squeaky clean retellings here … in fact, at the very beginning of Volume One there’s a content-note trigger-warning for sexual coercion and manipulation (though probably not from who you think)。 Smythe’s Greek Mythology retelling has the feel and hedonism of a J。 C。 Leyendecker illustration, but with an almost ‘Fantasia’-like illustrative style … all solid hues, women with Betty Boop-curves and men sporting illustrated six-packs。 It’s lush and also a little unformed … but that’s kind of true of the story too。 It’s a ‘Gossip Girl’ meets ‘Suits’ and ‘American Psycho’ version of Olympus, the Greek Gods wearing nicely cut suits as they attend nymphe strip-clubs, Zeus and Hera conduct public spats and Goddesses walk around in tight mini-skirts and platform-heels with Ariana Grande high-ponytails。 Is it revolutionary and cutting-edge with a new twist and spin on the ‘Hades and Persephone’? … I mean, no。 Not really。 It’s just very lush and a bit of a lightly hedonistic romp through the Greek Myths, nice enough but if I want to know more I think I’ll read the rest online。2。5/5 。。。more

This was very good but the only thing I will say is that authors need to put proper trigger warnings in their books and on their selling platforms。 Not only did I preorder this book with full excitement but I was lowkey shocked when I opened it for the first time and saw a page that had TW, because there were no TW on the website that I purchased the book from。 I have never read this book and I was happy to see the TW。 I think they are important。 After finishing It I realized that the TW provide This was very good but the only thing I will say is that authors need to put proper trigger warnings in their books and on their selling platforms。 Not only did I preorder this book with full excitement but I was lowkey shocked when I opened it for the first time and saw a page that had TW, because there were no TW on the website that I purchased the book from。 I have never read this book and I was happy to see the TW。 I think they are important。 After finishing It I realized that the TW provided were so generalized that it did nothing to prepare someone for what happens。 Authors please do not use umbrella terms for a TW。 They are not helpful and truly are not a warning。 Please just state the facts and WARN people。 That’s what TW are for。 They are to WARN people that something will occur。 But when you use an umbrella term you are taking away the importance of that warning and basically glossing over the feelings and experiences of your readers and that’s disgusting。 If you are going to put a trigger warning, take it seriously and don’t just use generalized terms to make people feel like you care。TW for those who need it。 There is a rape。 。。。more

I started reading this title on the Webtoons app, and I have loved following the author's vivid take on the classic tale of Hades and Persephone with every update。 And the new hardcover print version is even more glorious。 The colors are richly vibrant and translate the original vertical scrolling format beautifully。Rachel Smythe's art style reminded me of Al Hirschfeld initially, with her bold lines and elegant curves, but it is truly her own。 It gives the reader a feast for the eyes while conv I started reading this title on the Webtoons app, and I have loved following the author's vivid take on the classic tale of Hades and Persephone with every update。 And the new hardcover print version is even more glorious。 The colors are richly vibrant and translate the original vertical scrolling format beautifully。Rachel Smythe's art style reminded me of Al Hirschfeld initially, with her bold lines and elegant curves, but it is truly her own。 It gives the reader a feast for the eyes while conveying such nuance that I see and learn something new about every character each time I read it。 Her use of color is mind blowing, so I am grateful it is just as amazing in print as it is online。She also broaches difficult topics such as bullying, PTSD, depression, date rape, communication breakdowns, toxic relationships, and gaslighting through the story in a way that brings awareness to them in a pointed way without making them the sole focus of the story。 The characters are incredibly fleshed out people, with many facets to their lives。 They are more than their traumas。 And I love them for it。 I am looking forward to having vol 2 and the rest of the Lore Olympus story in my personal collection。 It will hold a place of honor there。Recommend for fans of Linda Sejic, Brodi Ashton, Jacqueline Carey, and Rainbow Rowell。TW: strong language and those listed above 。。。more

I wasn’t sure if I’d like this, but I’ve had good luck with the web comics I’ve picked up physicals of, so I decided to give it a try。 The art is interesting – vibrant, a bit messy, but classy。 I think it really fits the story Smythe is telling, and I enjoy consuming it。 I can see why people are so attracted to this telling。 I didn’t expect the modern aspects, you’re immediately met with a cell phone screen。 But I think painting the mortal realm as behind in the times smoothed the jarring experi I wasn’t sure if I’d like this, but I’ve had good luck with the web comics I’ve picked up physicals of, so I decided to give it a try。 The art is interesting – vibrant, a bit messy, but classy。 I think it really fits the story Smythe is telling, and I enjoy consuming it。 I can see why people are so attracted to this telling。 I didn’t expect the modern aspects, you’re immediately met with a cell phone screen。 But I think painting the mortal realm as behind in the times smoothed the jarring experience of realizing Olympus is like our modern world。 We were slowly introduced to the idea of new technology having a place in the world of the gods through Persephone。 Be ready to gnash your teeth towards the end。 I’ll be looking for some retribution in volume 2。 After bemoaning my decisions to read the popular adult fiction releases, Neon Gods and A Touch of Darkness, (which also tote themselves as Hades x Persephone retellings) I did not have high hopes。 But I enjoyed reading this, and I have to know what happens, vengeance is required! I’ll be reading volume 2。 。。。more

The art style was good and I liked that each character had a color and a distinct look。 However, I had a hard time getting into the story due to the often cringy and poorly written dialogue。 I also, found the writing to be immature。 Overall I liked the concept but not the execution。

Addictive, gorgeous, stunning, and overwhelmingly evocative, and emotive。 Reading a few episodes/chapters alone makes it immensely obvious as to why this particular webcomic has been such a smash hit。 I need more now。
